After the river, we headed for the remote northeaster corner of California and the Medicine Lake Volcanic area, where obsidian glass lava flows are common.
Wildfire has left its mark there, too.
At Lava Beds National Monument, the landscape is riddled with lave-tube caves. Some have indigenous artwork at the entrances.
