In late September, Leslie and John headed to Portland, Oregon, to take delivery of a camper van they had begun designing a year earlier. Avoiding fire, smoke and interactions with other people, they took their new rig — conceived as a retirement amenity but now a pandemic isolation bubble on wheels — on a 2,400-mile shakedown odyssey across Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Nevada.
